Sustainable Living

Following our vision to breathe life into the existing old structure and with our motto ‘local and sustainable’, we put emphasis on locally sourced materials and craftsmen, reusing existing materials where possible. Traditional materials and techniques – wood, marble and iron compliment the exposed stonework. The soft furnishings, covers and cushions use Greek textiles in a variety of traditional patterns. We have sourced and refurbished old furniture, old silk carpets and displayed the beautiful handmade decorative art pieces created painstakingly more than 100 years ago by the women of the family.

For the underfloor heating we have invested in a ground source heat system, one of very few such examples in the Peloponnisos, to minimise our energy foot print. The groundheat system uses the ambient heat from the ground instead of burning fossil fuels and is fed by five vertical boreholes that were drilled 150metres into the schist substrata under the house garden. This allows us to heat the house even in the coldest winter days, with minimum energy at an optimum temperature. Although each room was designed to also have energy efficient pellet fireplaces, given the latest environmental and health guidance we decided against installing them and have only a energy efficient fireplace in the main hallway. Water is provided by the local mountain springs. For cooling during the summer months, we rely on the building stone mass and the smart ceiling mounted ceiling fans. Additionally, an efficient building management system closely monitors the LED lighting and heating to minimise energy waste.

For your personal amenities enjoy the ‘My Roots’, Elixir range created using organic Greek herbal ingredients based on honey and citrus essences. By using reusable sustainable containers, we minimise plastic use and avoid one of the biggest environmental hotel problems.

The garden has been designed with a ‘local and sustainable’ vision to encourage a wildlife-friendly habitat by encouraging local wild flowers, hardy plants that can survive the cold winter nights and planting flowers that are bee and butterflies attractors.
